What should I be sure I do to upgrade to high speed internet?
Bill G asked:
My son wants me to upgrade to high-speed internet so he can download music faster to his ipod. I am concerned about what I need in terms of firewalls and spyware blockers and anti-virus and computer hackers. I am running Webroot’s Spysweeper with anti-virus and SystemSuite’s Netdefense firewall on my dialup connection right now. Should I consider better programs than these?
He also wants to have a wireless LAN in the house. How do I prevent someone from tapping in to that?
We are considering BellSouth’s DSL because I can combine my cell, home phone and dialup accounts for about the same money and still get this high-speed connection. I just need to purchase the necessary hardware and software protection. By the way, BellSouth offers a firewall at $10/month. Would that be better advised than buying some third-party firewall such as Norton?
Why is all this stuff so complicated?

Why is all this stuff so complicated?
So people can charge you a bunch of money to set it up.
Sounds like you have firewall and virus protection covered. For wireless LAN, just set up security (explained in the book that comes with router).
The stuff you have on right now is pretty good (Spysweeper and NetDefense), but in addition to that, get CounterSpy, Ad-Aware, Avira AntiVir, Hijackthis.
None of those four (except AntiVir) have to be running at all times. Just make sure you periodically scan with CounterSpy and Ad-Aware. Use HijackThis if you suspect backdooring.
Also, for Wi-Fi, get a good router. I suggest Belkin routers, they are not easy to hack in to.
Its not complicated at all, well a bit.
There are a lot of free things out there that is good.
For virus scanner, i recommend avg free.
I use mcafee personal firewall, very good at temerning traffic in and out.
For wireless make sure the wireless router you buy does support wpa-psk. which so far the best encryption for home users. 802.11g equipment supports this. Get updates from microsoft incase you can find how to use wpa. there is an update somewhere
Email me if you get stuck
Calling your provider and getting the speed upgrade is all you have to do. Re the firewall - if you get a wireless router it is a firewall and if you enable WAP (in the settings when setting up the wireless router) you secure your systems. The firewall built in the router and with WAP enabled it makes it a secure as it is every going to be. But, you still need an anti-virus program…..again Norton (if you want to pay for one and AVG if you don’t.)
